What happens if you arrive at the Ukrainian border without insurance

Without valid insurance, the Ukrainian State Border Guard can refuse you entry and send you back to Poland. In practice, most officers let you sort it out from your phone before making a decision, and the process fits into five minutes. This guide explains exactly what happens and how to get through it.

Is refusal automatic?

There is no single procedure. The officer checks passport and insurance; if the insurance is missing, they have two options: let you buy it on the spot or refuse you entry. The decision depends on the crossing, the time of day and how you approach it. What never happens is being let through "just this once" without a policy.

If you travel by train, the check is done inside the carriage at Przemyśl (Polish side) or at Shehyni/Mostyska (Ukrainian side). Without insurance, the officer will ask you to get off the train, and the train does not wait.

How to sort it out in the queue

  1. Open the purchase form on your phone. It works on Polish mobile data right up to the border post.
  2. Enter your name and surname as in your passport, passport number, date of birth, email and phone number.
  3. Choose today's date as the entry date and the number of days you will stay. If you are not sure, put more.
  4. Choose the plan: €3,000 or €30,000 insured sum. The cover is the same.
  5. Enter the 4-digit code sent to your email and pay by card.
  6. Download the PDF on the confirmation page and show it on screen to the officer.
Data coverage: at Medyka, Przemyśl and Korczowa there is Polish network coverage (your EU roaming tariff works). At Shehyni, Krakovets and Rava-Ruska the network is Ukrainian and Spanish roaming may be expensive or not work at all. Buy the insurance before crossing the Polish checkpoint.

What does the officer look at in the PDF?

  • That the name matches the passport, letter for letter.
  • That the start date is today or earlier.
  • That the end date covers the days you declare.
  • The insurer's name (EUROINS Ukraine is on the National Bank's list).

No need to print it or have it stamped. The phone screen is enough.

What if the insurance has expired or was filled in wrongly?

It is treated the same as having no insurance. The most common mistakes are dates that do not cover the whole stay and names with accents or ñ that do not match the passport's machine-readable zone. The solution is the same: buy a new policy on the spot. The old one cannot be corrected.

What happens if I am refused entry?

You are sent back to the Polish side with a note in the State Border Guard's system. It is not an entry ban: you can try again with valid insurance, even the same day. But you will have missed your train and, if you were driving, lost several hours of queuing. Buying the insurance before leaving home costs the same and avoids all of this.

I am already inside Ukraine without insurance. What do I do?

Buy the policy today with today's date as the start. The law requires cover for the whole stay, not just at the border, and above all it is what pays the hospital if something happens to you. Nobody is going to check that there was a gap, but you will certainly notice the difference if you need care.
