Before calling, it is worth knowing what the consulate can and cannot do for you: it does not pay hospitals, it does not arrange individual evacuations and it is no substitute for medical insurance.

Public opening hours change with the security situation. Call or write before going; appointments are the norm for consular procedures.
What the embassy can do for you
- Issue a provisional passport or emergency travel document if you lose yours.
- Inform your family if you are hospitalised or detained, and visit you in prison.
- Provide a list of lawyers and of hospitals that treat foreigners.
- Register you in the Travellers' Register and alert you by SMS or email in a crisis.
- Handle the repatriation of remains together with the family and the insurer.
- Include you in a collective evacuation organised by the Spanish State.
What it cannot do
- Pay medical expenses, hospitalisation or medication. That is what your insurance does, and the embassy will ask about it as soon as you call.
- Arrange an individual medical evacuation or a transfer to Spain.
- Get you out of Ukraine if you are in a combat zone or in occupied territory.
- Intervene in decisions of the Ukrainian State Border Guard (refusal of entry, length of stay).
- Lend you money, except in exceptional cases and with a guarantee of repayment.
That is why Ukrainian medical insurance is not just a border requirement: it is the only thing that pays for your care. With the Extended plan, the insurer arranges the hospital, the transfer and the repatriation; the embassy supports you, but does not fund it.
Travellers' Register: do it before you leave
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Travellers' Register takes five minutes and lets the embassy locate you and warn you if the situation changes. Enter your dates, cities and a phone number that works in Ukraine. It is free and commits you to nothing.
