A Spanish volunteer in Ukraine needs a Ukrainian policy with an insured sum of €30,000: it is the minimum that serious NGOs require and what actually pays the bill if something goes wrong near the front. Both plans on this site cover damage from military action, medical evacuation and repatriation; the difference is the limit.
Why €30,000 and not €3,000?
The cover on both plans is identical: medical assistance, hospitalisation, evacuation, injuries from military action and repatriation. What changes is the limit. A night in intensive care in a private clinic in Kyiv costs between €800 and €1,500; a medical evacuation by ambulance from Kharkiv to Kyiv, between €1,500 and €3,000; surgery for shrapnel wounds, more. With a €3,000 limit, the insurance runs out on the first serious day. With €30,000 it covers the full treatment and the transfer.
What does an NGO require?
Registered organisations usually require their volunteers to have:
- Medical insurance valid in Ukraine with a minimum of €30,000 of cover and war risk included.
- A policy valid for the whole mission period, with a margin of a few days.
- A copy of the PDF for the coordinator before arrival.
The Extended plan meets all three points. The PDF includes name, passport number, dates, limit and insurer, which is what the coordinator checks.
How do I insure the whole team?
A single policy can hold up to 10 people. In the form, the first insured person is the one who enters the email and phone number; the others are added as companions with name, surname, date of birth, passport and phone. Everyone has the same dates and the same cover, and they all appear on the same PDF. If team members arrive on different dates, it is best to have one policy per arrival group.

Do I need the radiation option?
Only if you are going to work near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant (Enerhodar, Nikopol, Marhanets), in the Chornobyl zone or around the Rivne and Khmelnytskyi plants. For the rest of the country, no. It multiplies the price by 3.5, so decide with care.
What documents does the border ask a volunteer for?
- Passport and insurance, like any foreigner.
- They may ask about the organisation. A stamped invitation letter or a letter from the NGO helps, but it is not mandatory for visa-free entry.
- If you are carrying humanitarian aid in a vehicle, the goods need a declaration and, for certain items (medicines, drones, communications equipment), prior authorisation. Without paperwork, customs holds the cargo.
For stays of more than 90 days you need a temporary residence permit for volunteering, which can only be processed by organisations registered with the Ministry of Social Policy. Start the procedure in the first few weeks.
How to use the insurance in a conflict zone
- Save the PDF offline and write the assistance number down on paper. Network outages are frequent near the front.
- In the event of an injury, the initial evacuation is done by Ukrainian services or by your own team to the nearest hospital. The insurance kicks in from the hospital: call assistance as soon as possible so they can arrange payment and, where appropriate, the transfer to Kyiv or Lviv.
- Keep medical reports, invoices and photos of the documents. They are the basis of any refund.
